What do you know about Taiwan History?

Taiwan is an island country located off the southeastern coast of China, southwest of Okinawa and north of the Philippines. Taiwan has a long history and is rich in culture.

The island of Taiwan was originally inhabited by Austronesian people and was colonized by the Dutch in the 17th century. In 1662, the Dutch ceded control of Taiwan to the Kingdom of Zheng, which ruled over much of present-day Fujian Province and parts of Guangdong Province on mainland China. The Qing dynasty annexed Zheng in 1683 and ruled all of China, including Taiwan, from 1644 to 1912.In 1895, Japan defeated China in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), and ceded Taiwan to Japan under the terms of the Treaty of Shimonoseki (1895). Japan then governed Taiwan as a colony until losing control of the island at the end of World War II in 1945.

In 1949, after losing a civil war on mainland China to Communist forces led by Mao Zedong, Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek retreated to Taiwan with his remaining troops and declared Taipei to be the temporary capital of China. The Nationalists proclaimed Taipei to be the legitimate government, to continue their fight against communism from Taiwan - an island they hoped would one day help them recover control over all of China. From 1949 to 1979, American policy regarding Taiwan was consistent in regarding Taipei as second government rather than Beijing's Communist regime - even though Washington never formally recognized Taipei."

Since 1979 however," things have changed dramatically. While Washington continues to deal with Beijing rather than Taipei diplomatically - in order to avoid problems with what is now seen as a more important economic partner - it has also increased its military support for Taiwan, making clear that any attack on Taiwan would be considered an aggression warranting American intervention."

At present," relations between Beijing and Taipei are strained but peaceful. Beijing considers Taiwan a part of its territory that needs to be reunified with mainland China eventually -by force if necessary - while most Taiwanese want their country to remain independent or even become fully independent."
